Reproduction and Representation

The website contains scanned photographs of oil paintings, photography and digital renderings of 3d virtual models. The concept of the physical "original" only really exists for the paintings. The photographs arguably only become "real" when printed, while the digital work comfortably lives on both the screen and in print. Because of this, the primary commercial offerings are photographic based prints. That said, the reproductions of the paintings place another layer of ambiguity to the concept of origins. Since most people in recent history have mainly viewed major works of art in this manner, it is not unusual to perceive the printed simulation of a painted surface as a valuable representation of the work itself. Simulation is an inherently complex and pertinent topic in any art-form. Digital media amplifies these prospects and allows us to share aspects of creation in a more prolific manner than ever before. Art is a sensory manifestation of ideas, however, it is not a straight translation. In fact, the process of this translation is the primary focus and method in my work.
